Hayward AquaRite Error CHECK SALT

Cell reads low salt. Test salt, clean the cell, check cell type, reset average salt.

The AquaRite reads low salt. Confirm with your own test, add salt if needed, and clean the cell.

Full answer & models

On a Hayward AquaRite, flashing Check Salt and Inspect Cell lights mean the cell reads 2,400 to 2,700 ppm (production continues); solid lights mean 2,300 ppm or less and chlorine production is suspended. Test salt independently, clean the cell, verify the programmed cell type, and reset average salt.

Power and pump off before removing the cell. Always add acid to water.
Why
Turn power and the pump off before removing the TurboCell. Muriatic acid can cause serious injury: wear protection and always add acid to water, never water to acid.

What CHECK SALT means

Cell reads low salt. Test salt, clean the cell, check cell type, reset average salt.

More detail
Per Hayward AquaRite Troubleshooting Guide AQR159d, flashing Check Salt and Inspect Cell LEDs mean the cell reports 2,400 to 2,700 ppm, which does not affect chlorine production. Solid LEDs mean 2,300 ppm or less and chlorine production is suspended. Desired salt is 3,200 ppm. The system should read within 500 ppm of an independent test. An Inspect Cell LED flashing alone is a 500-operating-hour reminder to inspect and clean the cell.

5-minute checks

Fix it step by step

Step 1 of 5

  1. Test salt independently

    • 5 min
    • Calibrated salt meter or strips
    • DIY

If salt is below 3,200 ppm, raise it to 3,200 ppm.

    More detail

    Test salt independently.

AQR159d step 1A. Use the salt addition table in the guide for the amount.

  2. Inspect and clean the cell

    • 30 min
    • Muriatic acid, Bucket or cell cleaning stand, Goggles and gloves
    • Caution

The cell must be clean to report accurate salt readings.

    More detail

    Inspect and clean the TurboCell.

Hayward AQR159d: mix 4 parts water to 1 part muriatic acid (acid into water), stand the cell vertically, fill it to the top, and let it sit in 15-minute intervals until the reaction is complete. Pour the solution back into an approved container, rinse the cell thoroughly, and reinstall.

  3. Check programmed cell type

    • 5 min
    • None
    • DIY

The cell model on the cell label must match the model programmed in the control center.

    More detail

    Verify the programmed cell type.

AQR159d: t-15 is the factory default. If the programmed type does not match the label, change it.

  4. Reset average salt (twice)

    • 10 min
    • None
    • DIY

Reset average salt twice; the two instant readings should be within 500 ppm.

    More detail

    Reset average salt twice.

A TurboCell has two polarities. A clean cell should never show more than a 500 ppm difference between them. If it does, Hayward's next step is replacing the cell.

  5. Replace the cell if needed

    • Decision
    • None
    • Pro decision

If the two readings differ by more than 500 ppm, replace the cell with the same model.

    More detail

Replace the TurboCell if readings disagree.

Then reset average salt. Hayward part numbers: T-CELL-15 / T-CELL-9 / T-CELL-3 (GLX-CELL-xx-W versions when under warranty).

Code cleared. Nice work.

Recheck chlorine in a week. Pros do the same.

Fixed after any step? Recheck chlorine in a week. Still CHECK SALT after step 5? See the replacement part or call a pro.

Call a pro if…

  • Readings stay more than 500 ppm apart after cleaning and reset.
  • Lights do not clear after replacing the cell (contact Hayward support via Hayward.com).

FAQ

What does flashing vs solid mean?

Flashing: 2,400 to 2,700 ppm, production continues. Solid: 2,300 ppm or less, production suspended (AQR159d).

What salt level does Hayward want?
