Jandy AquaPure Error 144

Salt below 2.0 gpl. Add salt to reach 3.0 gpl.

Salt is below 2,000 ppm. Add salt to reach 3,000 ppm, the way the manual describes.

Full answer & models

Jandy AquaPure service code 144 means low salinity, below 2.0 gpl (2,000 ppm). Add salt to reach 3.0 gpl using the method and amounts in Section 4.7.

Pump off and pressure released before removing the cell. Goggles and gloves for acid.
Why
Turn the pump off and release filter pressure (open the filter air relief valve) before removing any component from the plumbing. Muriatic acid can cause serious injury: wear goggles and rubber gloves, work in a ventilated area, and always add acid to water.

What 144 means

Salt below 2.0 gpl. Add salt to reach 3.0 gpl.

More detail
Per Jandy manual H0325600, Section 7.2, code 144 indicates salinity below 2.0 gpl; the corrective action is to add salt to achieve 3.0 gpl (Section 4.7). The manual recommends 3.0 to 3.5 gpl and warns that salt below 2.0 gpl causes premature cell failure. A scaled cell can read low, so a dirty cell is worth ruling out.

5-minute checks

Fix it step by step

Step 1 of 3

  1. Confirm salt level

    • 5 min
    • Salt test strips or NaCl meter
    • DIY

Verify the low reading before adding salt.

    More detail

Confirm salt with an independent test.

Water temperature can affect the salinity readout; test at the equipment location.

  2. Add salt correctly

    • 24 hr (mostly waiting)
    • Pool salt (99.8% NaCl), Pool brush
    • DIY

Set production to 00%, broadcast salt around the perimeter, brush, and circulate 24 hours.

    More detail

Add salt the way the manual describes.

Section 4.7.4: run the pump, set CHLORINE PRODUCTION to 00%, use Table 2 for the amount, and broadcast salt around the outer perimeter or shallow end. Do not add salt through the skimmer, main drain, or surge tank. Brush and circulate 24 hours, verify the salt reading, then restore your production rate. Use 99.8% pure non-iodized NaCl. No rock salt, no calcium chloride, avoid anti-caking agents (YPS).

  3. Inspect and clean the cell

    • 30 min
    • Garden hose, Muriatic acid, Plastic bucket, Goggles and gloves, Port plugs
    • Caution

Remove the cell, look between the plates, and clean scale or debris per Section 6.3.

    More detail

    Inspect and clean the cell.

Jandy Section 6.3: first try a high-pressure jet of water from a garden hose. If that does not clean it, plug the two adjacent ports, mix one pint of muriatic acid into two quarts of tap water, and pour it into the cell. If vigorous foaming does not begin, the cell does not need acid cleaning. Otherwise leave it until foaming stops, but never more than 1/2 hour; excessive acid washing damages the cell. Rinse thoroughly, inspect, and reinstall. Do not put the sensor in acid.

Code cleared. Nice work.

Recheck chlorine in a week. Pros do the same.

  • Independent test shows salt in range but 144 persists.
  • Salt keeps dropping without dilution (rain, draining, splash-out).

Use only the salt type the manual allows.

Pool salt, at least 99.8% pure sodium chloride (evaporated, food quality, non-iodized)
